What Clogs Charlotte Gutters

Four species account for most of what we pull out of gutters here, and they fail a gutter in four different ways.
Willow oak
The catkins are the problem, not the leaves. They come down in Mar and Apr as long pendulous strands that lie across each other and mat into a felt. Water sits on top of it rather than draining through. Acorns follow from Sep to Nov and behave completely differently - they roll, and they jam outlets.
Loblolly pine
Needles are shed on a three-year cycle and replaced continuously, so there is no drop month to plan around. A needle is thin enough to pass a coarse screen and long enough to bridge once through, which is the combination that defeats most guards.
Sweetgum
Gumballs form in late summer, stay on the tree through winter and come down from Dec through Apr. They are too large to wash through and awkward enough to sit on top of a guard and dam it. A gutter that blocks in Feb usually has sweetgum over it.
Red maple
It blooms from Jan into Mar, before the leaves appear, and carries samaras from Apr to Jul. The winged seeds pack into corners and outlets rather than lying flat in the trough, so a run can look clear along its length and still not drain.
Four materials, four behaviours
It is worth being precise about what each type actually does, because the behaviour is what determines both the failure and the fix.
Catkins and needles mat. They are thin and long, so they lie across one another and knit into a felt that water sits on rather than passes through. This is the behaviour that defeats coarse screens, because the individual pieces are small enough to get in.
Acorns and gumballs roll and jam. Too large to wash through, they migrate along the trough until they reach the outlet and block it. Almost any guard excludes them - the risk is that they sit on top and dam a flat surface instead.
Samaras pack. Winged and light, they gather in corners and around outlets rather than distributing evenly, so a run can look clear along its length and still not drain.
Broad leaves lie flat and often still drain. The least troublesome of the four, despite being what everyone pictures when they think about blocked gutters.
Why the material matters more than the volume
A gutter full of broad leaves often still drains. A gutter with a mat of catkins over the outlet may look almost empty and hold water along its whole length. What is in there predicts the failure better than how much of it there is. It also predicts what will work. A guard is a filter, and filters are specified by what they must exclude - so the species overhead, not the size of the house or the length of the run, is the input that decides which guard is worth fitting.
It arrives on the roof first
Nothing in a gutter fell there directly. It landed on the roof and was washed or blown to the edge, which means a roof still carrying a season's worth of material is a gutter that will re-block shortly after being cleared. That is why, on a heavily wooded lot, clearing the roof surface and the valleys is part of the same job rather than an upsell. Clearing the trough while leaving the supply sitting above it is the usual explanation for a house that seems to need attention twice as often as its neighbours.
The part that is not leaves at all
Run a finger through the sludge at the bottom of an established blockage and a fair fraction of it is mineral rather than plant: grit washed off the shingle surface, dust settled out of the air, and soil splashed up from beds during hard rain. On its own none of that would block anything. Mixed with wet organic fines it sets into the dense, heavy paste that gathers at outlets and in the elbows of downspouts, which is why an old blockage weighs so much more than the leaves that started it and why it holds moisture against the metal long after the weather has dried. The leaf is the frame of a clog. This is the filler that makes it waterproof.
