Where the outlets have to keep up

Sizing the trough without sizing the outlets moves the bottleneck rather than removing it. The code rates a 6-inch gutter at 110 gallons per minute, and a 2-inch vertical drain at 34. A large run emptying through one small outlet cannot shift what it collects, and the surplus goes over the front edge exactly as if the gutter were too small. So a replacement quote should say how many downspouts the run will have and where they land, not just what size the gutter is. On a long elevation, adding an outlet is frequently worth more than adding an inch.

What replacement is a good moment for

The run is coming down anyway, which makes it the cheapest point to deal with anything behind it. Soft fascia is the obvious one - new gutters hung on wood that no longer holds a fixing will pull away again, and the board is only accessible while the gutter is off. It is also the moment to correct a roof edge that has been letting water track behind the gutter, and to add a cleanout if downspouts feed buried lines that have no access point.

Materials, briefly and without the sales pitch

Aluminium is the default here and it is the right default for most houses: light, non-rusting, formed on site, and inexpensive to replace if something goes wrong. Heavier gauge resists denting and ladder damage better than thin stock, and the difference in cost is small relative to the job. Copper exists, costs several times more, and is chosen for appearance on period properties rather than for performance. On a house inside one of Charlotte's eight local historic districts, material and profile may be constrained by the commission's standards, which is worth establishing before anyone quotes.

Common questions

Is 6-inch always better?

No. It costs more and it only helps if the roof area feeding that run justifies it. On a small elevation it is wasted money.

Do larger gutters need larger downspouts?

Usually, yes - the trough is only half the system. Sizing the gutter up while leaving the outlets small moves the bottleneck rather than removing it.
