The three failures we see most

Seams that have let go, usually at a corner or an outlet. Hangers pulling out of fascia that has gone soft. And runs that have lost their fall, so water stands in the middle instead of moving to the outlet.

Why a sagging run is not just cosmetic

Standing water is heavy. A run holding water pulls harder on its hangers, which loosens them further, which lets it hold more water. Left alone the problem accelerates rather than settling.

Repair or replace

We will say when a repair is not worth doing. A run with failed seams at several joints and hangers pulling through soft fascia is usually past the point where resealing buys much time.

What sealant can and cannot fix

Sealant is a gap filler, not a structural repair. It works where two sound pieces of metal meet and the joint between them has opened slightly - a corner mitre, an outlet collar, an end cap. It does not work where the metal itself has deformed, where a section has corroded through, or where the joint is moving. Gutters expand and contract with temperature across their whole length, and a joint that is being worked by that movement will reopen no matter what goes into it. A seasonally reappearing leak at the same seam is usually movement rather than a bad seal. Preparation decides most of the outcome. Sealing over standing debris or an unclean surface is the most common reason a repair fails within a season.

Sagging, and why it accelerates

A run should fall consistently toward its outlet. When part of it drops, water stops moving and starts standing, and standing water is heavy - roughly eight pounds per gallon. That weight pulls on the nearest hangers, which loosen, which lets the section drop further, which lets it hold more water. The problem compounds rather than settling, which is why a gutter that has sagged a little for a year can fail quickly in the next wet spell. The fix is often re-hanging rather than replacing, provided the fascia behind it is still sound. If it is not, the board is the real job and new hangers into soft wood will pull out again.

What we check before quoting a repair

Whether the run still has its fall, whether the fascia holds a fixing, how many joints have failed rather than just the one you noticed, and whether the outlets and any buried line actually take water. That last one changes the diagnosis more often than people expect. A gutter that overflows because the pipe below it is blocked does not need repairing at all.
